Peria School 2007 Education Review Office (ERO) report - summary.
(Full version  here )

To the Parents and Community of Peria School

These are the findings of the Education Review Office’s latest report on Peria School.

Peria School is located in an attractive, rural valley setting. The school, although small, is a central focus for its community. Teachers, students and parents have a strong commitment to the school. The well resourced facilities and spacious playgrounds provide students with a high quality learning environment. The staff and community are proud of their school and the opportunities that it provides for students.

Students of Peria School are highly motivated. They are articulate, enjoy learning, and are eager to make the most of the learning opportunities provided, including valuable opportunities to enhance the school environment. They demonstrate a strong sense of pride in their school and are enthusiastic about working collaboratively and sharing their learning. Relationships amongst students and adults are very positive and productive. Students show respect and consideration for one another. Older students are supportive of younger students and demonstrate responsibility and leadership.

Students, teachers and the school community have developed a holistic vision of student achievement. This vision promotes students’ development as ‘confident, capable learners who contribute to society’. In accordance with school goals, teachers encourage and acknowledge all forms of student achievement. In particular, they encourage students to demonstrate the values and competencies that provide a foundation for lifelong learning.

The school has sound information about student achievement. The principal, teachers and board make very good use of student achievement information to help them to shape teaching programmes and improve resources. Students are achieving well in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy. The majority of students are achieving at or above the levels expected for their age in these key curriculum areas. Teachers are developing useful strategies to assist students who are not achieving at expected levels.

Teachers provide good quality education. Classroom environments are learning focused and stimulating. Teachers affirm and challenge students and set high expectations for learning and behaviour. Students talk confidently about learning and achievement and are involved in setting learning goals and assessing their own learning. As a result, they are well placed to become confident and self-directed learners.

The principal and deputy principal work collaboratively to provide leadership for the school. They are supported by very capable staff. The principal has successfully accessed external funding to support the school’s professional learning and development programme. Professional development priorities are appropriately determined on the basis of findings from school self-review processes.

Trustees recognise the value of their school to the community and work hard to make it successful. They are supportive of the principal and work to support the education of the students and the future development of the school. The board’s strategic goals and targets clearly reflect the high priority that trustees place on improving student achievement. The principal provides the board and the community with comprehensive and regular reports on student achievement.

ERO and the board agreed that for this review, ERO would evaluate the quality of teaching and learning, with a focus on numeracy. In addition, the report also evaluates progress made in supporting Maori student achievement, the quality of teacher professional learning and development, and aspects of health and safety. The report recognises the improvements that have taken place since the 2005 ERO review and makes recommendations to support the ongoing development of the school.

Future Action

ERO is confident that the board of trustees can manage the school in the interests of the students and the Crown and bring about the improvements outlined in this report.

ERO is likely to review the school again as part of the regular review cycle.

Review Coverage

ERO reviews do not cover every aspect of school performance and each ERO report may cover different issues. The aim is to provide information on aspects that are central to student achievement and useful to this school.
