Term Three, Issue One - 2 July 2010
“Hei toi whakairo he mana
tangata”
Where there is artistic excellence, there is human dignity
Kia ora everyone,
Welcome to Term Three. I hope the holidays brought plenty of
opportunities for family time and that your child is now happy to be
back at school.
As we move into this term looking forward the big event on our calendar
is the Eastern Zone Cross Country which we will host here at school.
Runners, parents and teachers come from Oruaiti, Mangonui, Taipa,
Kaingaroa Schools and Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Rangiawhia to compete
against our children. This is a marvellous opportunity for our school as
firstly it gives our children a home advantage. We have had a kind offer
to mow the course from Grant Parker and we are just awaiting permission
from the Church’s management committee to do so. Secondly it is a great
opportunity for the school to fund raise and it has been very successful
in the past. This week a letter will go home requesting support in many
shapes and forms. From being able to be here on the day in the various
roles required (on-course marshal, cook, salesperson; the roles are many
and varied) to supporting us in other ways. Baking would be appreciated
as this has been a huge hit in the past and many visitors have commented
favourably about it.
Last term our school focus was ‘excellence’ (it is one of our values)
and I explained to the children there are two parts to this. Firstly
there is excellence in attitude or effort and secondly there is
excellence in the result you achieve. There is something quite special
in setting yourself a goal to do your best or to be the best and then
going out and achieving it. It can be very empowering and we will be
encouraging the children to try.
We have some outstanding runners at Peria and we I am hoping that we
might have representation at both the Far North and Northland Cross
Country races.
Finally I would like to acknowledge the following parents and friends of
our school who helped bury over head phone lines and move two school
fences during the holidays. These were Ged Price, Leigh Jennings, Ray
Olsen, Grant Parker and Steve Farry. What was thought to be a relatively
quick activity ended up being quite a mammoth task, fortunately made
easier by Ged’s truck and digger and a lot of elbow work by all the
others. Thank you very much, your help and expertise was greatly
appreciated.

Last term we sent home a national petition on
reducing the speed outside of schools for the period of before and after
school.
These need to be returned to the petition organisers by the end of this
month.
If you signed it yourself, or managed to collect signatures from family
and friends, please give it to your child to bring back to school over
the next week please.

CALL
FOR HELPERS
The shade sails outside of Te Puna are looking grubby and need to be
taken down and cleaned and then put back up
again.
We are planning to do this job on Sunday the 1st of August starting at
10am. We are expecting it to take 3 to 4 hours to complete, but the more
that are here to help the quicker it will take. If you could help us
with this please let us know.
REMINDER:
It is noticeable at school at the moment how many children are
physically exhausted by lunch time. This is fairly normal in the first
week back as children get back into school routines. Making sure your
child gets plenty of sleep will certainly help overcome this.
